Income tax

Plenty of people are willing to put forward proposals for changing the taxes we have to pay. (For instance, I have myself believed for many years that income tax and employees' National Insurance contributions should be rolled into a single progressive tax.) While it may be possible, in the abstract, to evaluate the merits of such proposals without knowing anything about their sources, it is perfectly plain that many of the arguments put forward are special pleading from people who want others to pay more and themselves to pay less. It is much easier to take an idea seriously if its advocates do not seem to be arguing for personal advantage.

I am therefore posting copies of my income tax returns for the years 2012-2013, 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2017-2018, 2018-2019. 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 to make my own situation relatively transparent.
